The Birth of Funchal
During this ever-changing period of transformation, the Funchal was conceived. Tasked with serving as both a cargo ship and a passenger transport by the Portuguese company “Insulana de Navegação,” it embarked on its maiden voyage, connecting Lisbon to the Azores and Madeira. Its reputation as a classic cruise ship grew, leading to expanded routes that stretched as far as Brazil and Australia.

The Funchal was meticulously manufactured and refurbished by skilled hands and responsible companies. No detail was left to chance. Over time, parts and equipment were continually improved and replaced to prioritize passenger and crew safety, ensuring an exemplary journey.
An Exclusive Cruise Ship
As the years passed, the Funchal transformed into an exclusive cruise ship, becoming synonymous with exceptional onboard experiences. It navigated diverse routes, showcasing its name and an onboard allure that earned it the prestigious title of “The Pride of Portugal.” It became the preferred means of transport for dignitaries and undertook historic missions, including the transport of Pedro I of Portugal’s remains to their final resting place in Brazil.
